SHHS Graduation 2020

Dear Senior Parents,

My apologies for the delay in SHHS graduation communications. Our graduation plan was approved this past week by the Napa County Public Health Department and we have finally received the honor cords, sashes, and medals that would have normally been distributed prior to the traditional graduation ceremony. It has been most challenging to ensure all materials and involved personnel are ready. Below is the plan as it stands right now. Please understand that minor elements might be subject to change, but we must adhere to the plan as laid out and approved by the County. The details are listed sequentially:

1. Cap and Gown Pick Up / Textbook & Equipment Drop Off (June 1-4).

  a. We have received caps and gowns for those students who ordered them. Students can pick up their orders at the SHHS office starting June 1 from 9 am - 12 noon. At the time of order pick up, students will return their textbooks and school-issued laptops and chargers.

  b. Safety guidelines for return of textbook and laptops:

    i. While on campus, students and/or parents need to adhere to social-distancing protocols by staying 6 feet apart and wearing a face covering at all times.

ii. Students and/or parents will line up 6 feet apart at the south breezeway entrance to the SHHS Hub/Library.

iii. Students and/or parents will enter one at a time the Hub/Library and return to pre-marked tables their textbooks, novels, and other borrowed materials.

iv. Instructions for textbook/material placement will be posted in the Hub/Library, and all tables will be marked accordingly.

    v. Students will collect their cap and gown orders after leaving the Hub/Library; we will distribute orders in the quad area near the SHHS main office.

vi. When students collect their graduation orders, they and/or parents will immediately leave the campus. For everyone’s safety, please do not congregate and socialize while on campus.

2. Diploma Distribution / Honors / Scholarships(June 8 and 9). Masks are required for attendees.

  a. Traffic Control. All cars will enter the semi-circle in front of Vintage Hall. When cars begin to back up beyond the north entrance to the semi-circle, then cars will line up on Grayson Avenue. Please see the recommended alphabetical window below of graduate last names. We have strived to provide ample time (12 hours overall), so that no one feels rushed or has an extended wait.

  b. Parking and Intake Process (please refer to 1st image here VH Parking). Because only one graduate and his/her family (those who reside within the home) will be allowed at one time, you will park your car in the semi-circle in front of the southern sidewalk of Vintage Hall. An SHPD member will direct you. All following cars will line up behind the first car. You must stay in your vehicle during this time.  When a family returns to their car, having completed the circuit and exited, cars will move forward and repeat the process.

  c. Vintage Hall Stations (please refer to 2nd image here VH Stations).

    i. Enter the southern door on the bottom floor of Vintage Hall. All scholarships, honor cords, and sashes will be inside labeled plastic bags on tables. Locate your name and open bag to put on all cords, sashes, and medals on the outside of your gown. Each bag contains a 2020 fleur de lis mask made by a local quilting group.

ii. Walk up the north staircase to the 2nd floor and enter the northern door of the Board Room. At that time, I will call the graduate’s name, list awards received, and read your post-secondary school or plan. (Please notify Mr. Garrity of your post-secondary option if you have not already done so.) All this activity will be recorded and live streamed. You will walk in front of the table to collect your diploma and then proceed to exit through the southern door of the Board Room.

***The calling of student names and collection of diplomas on June 8 and 9 from 12 pm - 6 pm will be live streamed on the SHUSD YouTube Channel, link below. Provide family members and any other individuals with this link so they may see the graduate receive his/her diploma.

iii. Walk down the center staircase inside Vintage Hall to exit out the front of the building. You may take a photo with your diploma and family if you choose.

iv. Return to your vehicle and exit the circle, so the next family can pull forward and begin their process.

3. Friday, June 12, Graduation Day. A recorded video of the June 8-9 events - edited with the singing of the Star Spangled Banner, student speeches, Mr. Scinto’s speech, and the presentation of the class - will be distributed to the SHHS community via email and will also be available on the district and SHHS websites.
