As part of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), SHUSD uses standards-based report card in grades TK-5 to show progress towards meeting the CCSS.  The reason for the reporting system is to provide parents and students progress towards meeting grade-level content standards within various subjects.  The report card is designed to give parents a much clearer picture of how their child is performing.

How are Standards-Based report cards different from the traditional report cards?

Traditional report cards usually assign one grade for reading, one for math, one for science and so on.  On our new Common Core Standards-Based report card, each of these subject areas is divided into a list of skills and content that students are responsible for learning.  Students will receive a separate mark for each standard assigned under that subject area.

With the new standards-based reporting, students are more objectively evaluated according to grade-level expectations. The new report card will have three different numbers (3, 2, and 1) to indicate a child’s progress towards meeting the CCSS per grading period. An achievement mark of “3” indicates that a student is meeting grade level expectations at the time of reporting.  An achievement mark of “1” indicates a student is not meeting grade-level expectations and additional support might be needed
