When are the school board meetings scheduled? What's the purpose of holding board meetings publicly?
- Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month. Open session begins at 6 pm.

- School boards are required to hold their meetings in public setting. The business of the board is to be conducted in public, however, the board meeting is not a meeting with the public. Interactions of the board with the public are limited by the Brown Act.
The role of the school board is to ensure that school districts are responsive to the values, beliefs and priorities of their communities. Boards fulfill this role by performing five major responsibilities:
- Setting direction
- Establishing an effective and efficient structure
- Providing support
- Ensuring accountability
- Providing community leadership as advocates for children, the school district and public schools

There are several ways to participate in a school board meeting. You can attend a meeting in person at the district office in the Vintage Hall Board Room. If you cannot attend in person, please learn more about how to participate virtually by clicking here.

Public comments are accepted at the start of closed session, the start of open session and for most agenda items. Comments are limited to 3 minutes in length. If you would like more information about general public comments, comments on agendized items, and meeting conduct please click here.
How do I communicate with board members? What is the board protocol for responding to citizen Input?
The school board represents the community; therefore it needs to respect input from the community. The school board wants to be in touch with the community and know what is important to its members. Community members need to feel they are being listened to and heard. The school board wants to be consistent in the way it responds to community concerns. SHUSD protocol states that the Board president responds to correspondence on behalf of the board. It is important for community members to know that no one board member holds any individual authority to act or speak for the entire board. Click here to read more.
